Christ Plus Nothing

What if the very thing we trust most to make us right with God is the very thing standing in our way? In this message drawn from Galatians 3, we are confronted with a deeply human tendency: the impulse to build codes. Whether it is a fitness regimen, a work ethic, a religious routine, or a moral standard, we all construct systems by which we measure ourselves and quietly judge others. The Apostle Paul's sharp question to the Galatians cuts right to the heart of it: who has bewitched you? The Galatians had encountered the gospel, experienced the Holy Spirit, and then drifted back into rule-keeping as though Christ's sacrifice needed a supplement. The message challenges us to ask ourselves the same question. Have we, perhaps without even realizing it, turned the Christian life into a performance? The central truth that emerges is both simple and staggering: Christ plus nothing equals everything. The moment we add anything to the cross as a condition of our standing before God, we have misunderstood what the cross actually accomplished. This is not a message that lets us off the hook from living faithfully. Rather, it reorients the entire motivation. We are not striving to earn what Christ has already freely given. We are responding, in faith, to a love that has already paid the full price.
